The Social Media Index shows that traffic from the platform has routinely <a href=\"https:\/\/showcase.echobox.com\/smi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>dropped below 4%<\/strong><\/a> of all referrals through November and into December. This, our data indicates, is due to another change in Facebook&#8217;s algorithms. We also found that <\/span><b>Echobox users continue to perform better than non-Echobox users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nevertheless we&#8217;re monitoring the situation closely as well as working on ways to combat this trend.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falling Facebook traffic has been a major issue for news publishers during the past year or so. But not all news publishers have been affected equally. Publishers using Echobox have found this drop in referral traffic to be significantly smaller than those not using Echobox. Why is this the case?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did we get here?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishers have seen their advertising income disappear into the hands of a few big companies. Figures for 2022 showed the global ad market exceeding $500 billion, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/the-rundown-here-are-the-2022-global-media-rankings-by-ad-spend-google-facebook-remain-dominate-alibaba-bytedance-in-the-mix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with Google and Meta accounting for almost 50% of all revenues<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To counter this dominance, the idea of forcing large tech companies to pay for news content on their platforms has gained traction with lawmakers around the world. Facebook experimented with its <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/10\/25\/20930664\/facebook-news-tab-launch-united-states-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News Tab<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which paid publishers for links, while revenue-sharing deals have been struck in <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/02\/22\/facebook-to-restore-news-sharing-in-australia-after-government-makes-amendments-to-proposed-law\/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKySIh20vyUSy0QJBjWrYEShcKLZrCQOPD1UmDLk9exjvH4se-4UIr36_QCj0Xt--qHzoNvjt588fYH8jW4cqgY8wZO3BLukgh-T_d0pH0q6P00x1Oq_AMF6pecND1T0HaOnYhi7CLNCKPfl-BAQQ_luc4_UlK8R03qqFzQI-qQv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2022\/05\/11\/google-is-paying-more-than-300-eu-publishers-in-the-eu-for-news-with-more-on-the-horizon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the EU<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and legislation based on the Australian model has been passed in <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/emmawoollacott\/2022\/04\/06\/canada-moves-to-force-tech-firms-to-share-revenues-with-news-publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In countries such as <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/opinion\/et-commentary\/why-india-needs-a-policy-for-fair-revenue-sharing-between-big-tech-and-digital-publishers\/articleshow\/101708013.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/asianews.network\/indonesian-news-firms-push-for-a-rule-on-ads-revenue-sharing-and-algorithm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indonesia<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, calls to implement similar policies are growing as concerns about the viability of local and national news ecosystems mount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, attempts to pass revenue-sharing legislation have been met with stern resistance from the companies who would be affected. In the Australian case, Meta temporarily removed all news links from its services to force the government into a compromise. <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/aug\/01\/meta-canada-news-facebook-instagram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The same game of brinkmanship is underway in Canada<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than be forced to reach collective bargaining agreements in multiple nations, Meta has opted to deprioritize news altogether. In June of this year, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/facebook-traffic-down-algorithm-change-1850549012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gizmodo published an article based on Echobox data<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that showed traffic for some publishers declining precipitously. That piece quoted an anonymous employee at a publication who will speak for many in the industry. \u201cOur content,&#8221; he said &#8220;has provided a lot of value to Facebook, we\u2019ve been a part of the ecosystem since they launched Facebook Pages over a decade ago. Indeed, in a six-month period from the beginning of January to the end of June, the percentage of total traffic that publishers receive from Facebook has dropped from an average of 9.3% to 5.6% \u2014 a drop of 40%.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has this decline in Facebook traffic been as bad for publishers using Echobox?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falling Facebook traffic is a systemic issue, caused by fundamental changes to the platform.
