Following our research on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/white-papers\/when-is-the-best-time-to-post-on-facebook\/?utm_campaign=BL_BestTimeInstaTeaser&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the best time to post on Facebook<\/a>, which proved very popular with publishers, we received strong demand to repeat the study for Instagram.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Determining the best time to post on Instagram is a complex undertaking for any individual publisher. It would require significant data science resources and know-how, as well as extensive publisher data sets, to begin to analyze the best time to post on Instagram. Given Echobox\u2019s innovative technologies and currently unrivaled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/blog\/the-ultimate-facebook-research-series-for-publishers\/?utm_campaign=BL_BestTimeInstaTeaser&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">understanding of social platform algorithms<\/a>, we are well-placed to study the best time to post on Instagram and make recommendations to publishers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><strong>How did we measure the best time to post on Instagram?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To determine the optimal time to post on Instagram for publishers, we studied the total number of pageviews on publisher websites coming from Instagram on an hourly basis to identify peaks and dips in Instagram traffic at certain times of day. We examined the Instagram traffic of leading publishers in different countries and verticals to determine the following:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Is there a universal best time to post on Instagram for all publishers?<\/li>\r\n<li>Is there a best time to post to Instagram per country?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Is there a best time to post on Instagram for certain verticals?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Over the course of 18 months, our data scientists measured more than 20 million pageviews recorded in the local time zone for each publisher.<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><strong>Is there a universal best time to post on Instagram for all publishers?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We began by studying Instagram traffic patterns for two news-focused publishers to see if we would find similarities at certain times of day, indicating a universal best time to post on Instagram:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1612\" src=\"https:\/\/mk0resourcesechfwobs.kinstacdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Normalized-referral-traffic-from-Instagram-per-hour-UK-vs-US-news-publisher1-773x515.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Normalized-referral-traffic-from-Instagram-per-hour-UK-vs-US-news-publisher1-773x515.jpg 773w, https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Normalized-referral-traffic-from-Instagram-per-hour-UK-vs-US-news-publisher1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Normalized-referral-traffic-from-Instagram-per-hour-UK-vs-US-news-publisher1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Normalized-referral-traffic-from-Instagram-per-hour-UK-vs-US-news-publisher1-270x180.jpg 270w, https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Normalized-referral-traffic-from-Instagram-per-hour-UK-vs-US-news-publisher1-370x245.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>The best time to post to Instagram is different for these two publishers<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We observed that these US and UK publishers have radically different Instagram traffic patterns, despite their similar content focus, and the best time to post on Instagram is different for each publisher.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The US publisher\u2019s Instagram traffic tends to peak and dip every few hours throughout the day. Near midday, Instagram traffic rises sharply and remains elevated throughout the afternoon, hitting its highest point at 5pm, which would be the optimal time to post on Instagram for this publisher.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The UK publisher\u2019s Instagram traffic remains low throughout the small hours but starts to rise sharply after 4am, with the day\u2019s peak occurring at 6am. For this publisher, the best time to post on Instagram is early in the morning, before 8am.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Comparing these two publishers shows just how different the best time to post on Instagram can be for each publisher, despite being similar types of publications.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><strong>Is there a best time to post on Instagram per country? Or a best time to post to Instagram for certain verticals?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To find out, we examined another leading UK news publisher that has the same content focus as the one featured above. These variations can be considerable, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/blog\/instagram-vs-facebook-how-each-platform-drives-social-media-strategy\/?utm_campaign=BL_BestTimeInstaTeaser&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">especially when comparing weekdays and weekends<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But merely knowing what days or times people are on Instagram is not enough &#8211; publishers will need to know when each individual piece of content will resonate most with audiences and compel them to interact, read more, swipe up or click a link in the bio.
