Coronavirus&#8217; impact has been profound in certain industries. Publishers, many of whom already faced challenging times prior to the existence of COVID-19, have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2020\/apr\/09\/coronavirus-us-newspapers-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">hit particularly hard in some cases<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Yet in this time of uncertainty, people are turning to the media for crucial, reliable news and informative content. Now more than ever, the need for quality journalism is evident. We therefore set out to study how this need has translated into online traffic for publishers during the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><strong>COVID-19 impact on publisher traffic worldwide\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>As the world sought to understand and track how the coronavirus pandemic unfolded throughout the spring, traffic to news sites peaked in March but appeared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2020\/04\/the-coronavirus-traffic-bump-to-news-sites-is-pretty-much-over-already\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">return to pre-COVID levels<\/a> by mid-April. Other sectors, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comscore.com\/Insights\/Blog\/Coronavirus-pandemic-and-online-media-consumption-settling-into-the-New-Normal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">food retail, entertainment and education<\/a>, also experienced peaks in traffic as people shifted their shopping, recreation and schooling online.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In our first piece of research related to the pandemic, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/blog\/how-coronavirus-has-changed-the-face-of-news-in-less-than-30-days\/?utm_campaign=pandemicrecap&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=link1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">How coronavirus has changed the face of news in less than 30 days<\/a><\/em>, we examined the rise of coronavirus coverage in the global news agenda. We discovered that in less than one month, global shares related to coronavirus increased <strong>an astounding 16x<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Studying the shares of coronavirus news on social media, we observed how rapidly the topic came to dominate social media in certain countries most initially affected:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>France<\/li>\r\n<li>Germany<\/li>\r\n<li>Italy<\/li>\r\n<li>Spain<\/li>\r\n<li>United Kingdom<\/li>\r\n<li>United States<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>To discover how and when coronavirus news rose to prominence on social media in different countries\u00a0 \u2013 and how these trends mirrored the domestic spread of COVID-19 cases \u2013 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/white-papers\/how-coronavirus-changed-the-face-of-news-in-less-than-30-days\/?utm_campaign=pandemicrecap&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=link2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\"><em>download the white paper<\/em><\/a><em>:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-template-default wp-block-visual-link-preview-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/resources.echobox.com\/white-papers\/how-coronavirus-changed-the-face-of-news-in-less-than-30-days\/?utm_campaign=pandemicrecap&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=visuallinkpreview1\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Read more: How coronavirus changed the news in less than 30 days\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-image-container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-image\">\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mk0resourcesechfwobs.kinstacdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/COVID-19.png\" style=\"max-width: 150px; max-height: 150px\" \/>\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-text-container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-title\">\n\t\t\tRead more: How coronavirus changed the news in less than 30 days\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-summary\">\n\t\t\tWhat can we learn from social media coverage of COVID-19?\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><strong>Overall traffic and social media traffic both grew for publishers during the COVID-19 pandemic\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Following our initial analysis of coronavirus\u2019 impact on social media, we decided to carry out a new study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/white-papers\/publishers-and-the-pandemic-part-1\/?utm_campaign=pandemicrecap&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=link1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\"><em>Publishers and the pandemic: part 1<\/em><\/a>, to understand the coronavirus impact on publisher traffic. We analyzed traffic to the websites of more than 700 leading publishers in 43 countries to answer questions including:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>How did COVID-19 impact publishers\u2019 overall traffic?<\/li>\r\n<li>How did COVID-19 impact publishers\u2019 traffic from social media?<\/li>\r\n<li>How significant was this impact?<\/li>\r\n<li>Which countries saw the sharpest rises in social traffic during the coronavirus pandemic?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Which countries recorded the steepest drops in social traffic during the coronavirus pandemic?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>(To find out, and to consult our full methodology, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/white-papers\/publishers-and-the-pandemic-part-1\/?utm_campaign=pandemicrecap&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=link2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\"><em>please download our white paper<\/em><\/a><em>.)<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Our research found that during the coronavirus pandemic, overall publishers have witnessed <strong>significant increases<\/strong> in both total traffic and social traffic to their websites, delivering an important boost in pageviews as well as additional opportunities to engage audiences and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressgazette.co.uk\/ft-and-reach-titles-hit-new-online-records-with-coronavirus-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">attract new subscribers<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>On average, total traffic to publisher websites grew by a massive 65%<\/strong>, meaning that a publisher who received 10 million daily pageviews prior to COVID-19 would now be recording 16.5 million pageviews per day.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-info-box uagb-infobox__outer-wrap uagb-block-ac131ed3\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-infobox__content-wrap uagb-infobox uagb-infobox-has-icon uagb-infobox-icon-above-title uagb-infobox-image-valign-top uagb-infobox-enable-border-radius \">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-ifb-left-right-wrap\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-ifb-content\">\r\n<div class=\"uagb-ifb-title-wrap\">\r\n<h3 class=\"uagb-ifb-title\">+65%<\/h3>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"uagb-ifb-text-wrap\">\r\n<p class=\"uagb-ifb-desc\">Average increase in <strong>total traffic<\/strong> since coronavirus<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Traffic from social media also saw robust growth <em>\u2013 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.echobox.com\/resources\/white-papers\/publishers-and-the-pandemic-part-1\/?utm_campaign=pandemicrecap&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=link3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\">download the full white paper<\/a> to see how much publishers\u2019 traffic from social media increased since the coronavirus pandemic took hold.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"vlp-link-container vlp-template-default wp-block-visual-link-preview-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/resources.echobox.com\/white-papers\/publishers-and-the-pandemic-part-1\/?utm_campaign=pandemicrecap&amp;utm_source=resources&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=visuallinkpreview1\" class=\"vlp-link\" title=\"Read more: Publishers and the pandemic, part 1\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-image-container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-image\">\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mk0resourcesechfwobs.kinstacdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Pandemic1.png\" style=\"max-width: 150px; max-height: 150px\" \/>\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-text-container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-title\">\n\t\t\tRead more: Publishers and the pandemic, part 1\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"vlp-link-summary\">\n\t\t\tHow has COVID-19 affected publisher traffic worldwide?\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2><strong>COVID-19 impact on social media traffic by country<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Countries have adopted different policies and strategies to flatten the curve, and we know COVID-19 has not affected all regions equally. We therefore wanted to examine how publisher traffic in different countries had fared.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Of the 43 countries we studied, publishers in 33 countries saw growth in social media traffic, while publishers in the remaining 10 countries saw an overall decline in social traffic.
